FREELANCE Writing

Through the power of the written word, I pursue a connection with wild places, for readers, the organizations I work with, and myself.

Erin’s great to work with. Concise, clear, professional and sometimes - even funny.

Losing Blue

Blue. The most uncommon colour in nature. The brilliant turquoise of Lake Louise; the opaque aquamarine of Peyto Lake; an otherworldly glow firmly rooted in the geographical epochs of our planet. The interplay of nature and time delivers a spectacle, and people from around the world come to bear witness to what seems like an impossibility. How can a body of water deliver a cleansing breath? How can a thing so utterly terrestrial be so ethereal?

Behind the Lens With Captain Baguette

Agathe (pronounced Agat), is known by many names. Friends around the globe know her as Doctor Love, Backcountry Mom, the Adventure Queen or Captain Baguette. But her real name was inspired by the fiery-coloured beach pebbles—agate—back home in the volcanic depositions of Gaspésie, Quebec, where her dad grew up.

Blower Powder and Disappearing Pants

B.C.’s iconic Island Lake Lodge overdelivers on expectations and keeps them coming back year after year

Tucked away on the southwest flank of Mount Fernie, pleasantly secluded from the chaos that is modern life, sits iconic Island Lake Lodge. Magic awaits the skiers and snowboarders fortunate enough to secure one of the 12 seats in the lodge’s three snow cats for a winter’s stay, and a waitlist of untold souls lends credence to the legends swirling amongst the cold smoke powder on its 7,000 privately-held acres.

The hidden gems of the B.C. backcountry

Tucked away from the mainstream, the Backcountry Lodges of B.C. beckon wanderers off the beaten path.

If you like to be away, truly away, in the splendour and stillness of the wild where the conveniences of modern life cannot reach you—the Backcountry Lodges of British Columbia (BLBCA) are calling. Nestled into some of the most remote wilderness in the province, the more than 30 lodges of the BLBCA share the stage with carpets of wildflowers, glaciated cirques, meandering trails, steep alpine faces, exposed shoulders and dramatic ice heaves.

Come on, baby, light my fire

The word bushcraft likely conjures visions of being dropped out of a plane onto a hostile landscape with only a sewing kit and your bare-knuckle brawling skills to keep you alive.

Looking for a base camp for your next great adventure? Be it a hard-core backcountry objective or a first-time wilderness experience, Hosteling International (HI) Canada has got you covered.

Shifting gears

Often, when a thing is right up in your grill, easily accessible and abundant, it is easy to take its world-class awesomeness for granted.
